What is a Ring Main Unit (RMU)? Complete Guide

Somewhere in almost every city distribution network sits a small grey cabinet on a street corner, or a box buried in an underground vault, that quietly does the job of keeping power flowing when a cable fails. That box is a ring main unit, or RMU, and it is one of the least glamorous but most important pieces of kit in secondary distribution.

The name sounds technical, but the idea is simple, and it starts with how a ring network works.

Why the ring?

Imagine a loop of medium voltage cable running through a neighborhood, fed from both ends. That is a ring network. Now imagine a cable fault halfway around the loop. On a radial network — a dead-end feed — that fault would black out everything beyond it. On a ring, you can open the two switches either side of the fault, isolate the broken section, and keep feeding every other customer from the other end of the loop.

The RMU is the device that makes that isolation possible. It sits at the tee points where the ring cable passes through and where a branch drops down to a transformer. In its most common form, an RMU has three functions: two load break switches for the ring itself, and one tee-off that feeds the transformer.

The numbers are worth knowing. The ring switches are rated for the full ring current — typically 630A. The tee-off is protected by a fuse-switch combination for transformers up to roughly 1250kVA, stepping up to a vacuum circuit breaker for anything bigger.

The envelope makes the product

What turns a handful of switches into an RMU is how it is packaged. The compact, factory-assembled, metal-enclosed design is the whole point:

The SF6 version earns its keep because it is sealed. No dust, no humidity, no salt spray ever reaches the live parts. The tank is IP67-rated, which means it can sit through a flood without failing. And there is no routine maintenance on the primary side — the gas is sealed for life with leakage under 0.1% a year. For a utility that would otherwise send a crew out to clean and inspect every vault, that is a real cost saving.

The short version: an RMU is compact and cost-effective because it does not try to give every feeder a full circuit breaker. It assumes the transformer is the only load on the tee-off and protects it with a fuse — which is plenty for secondary distribution.

Where you will find them

  • Underground urban networks — in pits and vaults, connecting the ring cable that feeds neighborhoods.
  • Prefabricated substations — an RMU is often the HV side of a compact box substation like the YBM series, sharing the enclosure with the transformer.
  • Industrial and commercial parks — one RMU per building or zone, feeding its transformer.
  • Renewable projectswind and solar plants use RMUs for auxiliary and collector switching.
  • Infrastructure — airports, rail, tunnels, where space along the route is tight.

Choosing one

A few things settle the specification:

  • Voltage and fault level. Match to your system — typically 12kV or 24kV — and confirm the maximum fault current at the point of installation.
  • Number of functions. 2-function (two ring switches), 3-function (adds one tee-off), up to 5-function. Count your transformers.
  • Insulation. SF6 for harsh environments, solid insulated where SF6 is unwelcome, air for tight budgets indoors.
  • Automation. If you want remote control and SCADA, spec motor operators and an RTU now — retrofitting later is painful.
  • Environment. Flood risk, altitude, pollution all push toward SF6, which has the widest tolerance.

The quick answers
