Intelligent High-Voltage Motor Soft Starter

Thyristor-based solid-state soft start with touch screen control and comprehensive protection

The HGT series high-voltage solid-state AC motor soft starter is a new-generation motor starting and protection product developed by GOHO. It adopts advanced single-chip microcomputer control technology, integrating high-power semiconductor manufacturing, power electronics, and modern control theory — delivering reliable soft starting performance for 3kV to 10kV high-voltage motors.

Utilizing high-power thyristor (SCR) modules connected in series as the main control element, the HGT soft starter achieves smooth voltage ramp-up and precise current limitation during motor starting by controlling the thyristor conduction angle. This eliminates the mechanical shock and 6–8x current surge associated with direct-on-line (DOL) starting, significantly reducing stress on motor windings, driven equipment, and the upstream power supply network. The built-in 7-inch industrial touch screen provides intuitive parameter setting, real-time monitoring, historical logging, and comprehensive fault diagnosis.

  • 3kV–10kV voltage range — covers standard medium-voltage motor applications

Why Choose HGT Soft Starter

Advanced thyristor technology for smooth motor starting and comprehensive protection

Thyristor Series Technology

High-power SCR modules in series with dynamic and static voltage-sharing circuits ensure reliable operation at 3–10kV, with redundant design for continued operation even if a single thyristor fails.

Multiple Starting Modes

Supports current-limiting start, voltage ramp start, and soft stop — flexible configuration for pumps, fans, compressors, conveyors, crushers, and more.

7-Inch Touch Screen HMI

Industrial-grade touch screen with Chinese/English interface — intuitive parameter setting, real-time current/voltage/torque display, historical event logging, and graphical fault diagnosis.

Reduced Starting Current

Limits starting current to typically 2–4× rated vs 6–8× for DOL starting — eliminates voltage dips, reduces thermal stress on windings, and extends motor life.

Comprehensive Protection

Built-in microprocessor protection covers overcurrent, overload, phase loss, phase imbalance, overvoltage, undervoltage, SCR overtemperature, motor overtemperature, and stall protection.

Mechanical Stress Reduction

Smooth torque ramp eliminates mechanical shock to driven equipment — extends service life of couplings, gearboxes, belts, and bearings by reducing starting torque transients.

Soft Stop Function

Programmable soft stop gradually reduces motor voltage instead of instant disconnect — prevents water hammer in pump systems and material spillage on conveyor belts.

Remote Monitoring

Standard RS485/Modbus RTU with optional Profibus DP and Ethernet — integrates with plant DCS or SCADA for remote start/stop and real-time parameter monitoring.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about HGT high voltage soft starters

What's the difference between a soft starter and a VFD?

Both reduce motor starting current, but they work differently. A soft starter only controls voltage during start-up and stop — it ramps the voltage up gradually to limit current and reduce mechanical shock, then bypasses itself once the motor reaches full speed. A variable frequency drive (VFD) controls both voltage and frequency, allowing continuous speed regulation across the entire operating range. Soft starters are simpler, lower cost, and more efficient at full speed (no VFD losses). Choose a soft starter when you only need to reduce starting stress and current, and a VFD when you need precise speed control for process optimization or energy savings at part load.

Which starting mode should I use — current limit or voltage ramp?

It depends on your load type and constraints. Current-limiting mode caps the starting current at a set percentage (100–500% of rated), regardless of acceleration time — ideal when the power supply has limited capacity and you must stay within a current limit to avoid voltage dips. Voltage ramp mode gradually increases voltage from a starting level to full voltage over a set time — provides the smoothest torque ramp and is great for reducing mechanical stress on belt conveyors, pumps, and gearboxes. For most pump and fan applications, voltage ramp with soft stop is recommended. For high-inertia loads or weak grids, current-limiting mode is often the better choice. The HGT supports both modes — you can select the best one for each application.

What is soft stop and when is it needed?

Soft stop is the reverse of soft start — instead of instantly cutting power to the motor, the soft starter gradually reduces voltage over a programmable time (1–60 seconds), smoothly decelerating the motor. This prevents problems caused by sudden stopping. The most common application is water pump systems where instant stop causes water hammer — pressure surges that can damage pipes, valves, and pump seals. Soft stop is also beneficial for conveyor belts where sudden stops can cause material spillage or belt slippage, and for gear-driven equipment where the sudden torque reversal from stopping can shock the gear teeth. Not all applications need soft stop — fans and centrifuges typically coast down fine without it.

How many starts per hour can the HGT soft starter handle?

The HGT soft starter is typically rated for up to 12 starts per hour, but this depends heavily on the motor power, load inertia, and starting current setting. Each start generates heat in the thyristor modules — more starts mean more heat buildup, which requires longer cooldown periods. High-inertia loads (like large fans or mills) that take longer to accelerate generate more heat per start and reduce the allowable start frequency. Similarly, higher current limit settings produce more heat. For applications requiring more frequent starts, we can offer forced-air cooling options or oversized thyristor modules. Tell us your motor parameters, load type, and required duty cycle and we'll recommend the right configuration.

Does the HGT soft starter replace the need for a separate motor protection relay?

The HGT includes comprehensive built-in protection that covers most motor protection requirements: overcurrent, overload (thermal model), phase loss, phase imbalance, overvoltage, undervoltage, SCR overtemperature, motor overtemperature (with PTC sensor), and stall protection. For many standard applications, this eliminates the need for a separate protection relay. However, for installations requiring specialized protection schemes — such as differential protection for very large motors, or specific utility relay requirements — a dedicated protection relay may still be needed. The HGT can also integrate with external protection systems via its digital I/O and communication interfaces. We can advise on the best protection architecture for your specific project.

Can the HGT soft starter be integrated with our DCS/SCADA system?

Yes, the HGT soft starter supports multiple communication options for plant automation integration. Standard configuration includes RS485 with Modbus RTU protocol — the most common industrial communication standard. Optional upgrades include Profibus DP for Siemens-based DCS systems and Ethernet (Modbus TCP) for modern networked systems. Through these interfaces, you can remotely start and stop the motor, monitor real-time parameters (current, voltage, power, thermal state), read fault codes, and change settings. The 7-inch touch screen HMI also provides local monitoring and control when needed. We can provide detailed communication protocol documentation to your system integrator.
