Why Choose ABX-T Steel Loop Box

Durable steel construction with operator safety and installation flexibility

Robust Steel Enclosure

Manufactured from standard cold-rolled steel plate with electrostatic spray-powder coating, providing excellent mechanical impact resistance, corrosion protection, and a uniform professional finish — suitable for long-term indoor service in industrial, commercial, and residential environments where durability is required.

Flexible Installation

Compact design supports both surface-mounted (exposed conduit) and flush-mounted (concealed in wall recess) installation methods — providing installation flexibility for different building construction types and architectural requirements, from new builds with wall cavities to retrofit projects with surface conduit.

Multi-Layer Operator Protection

Internal protective shields physically isolate the operator from live busbars and component terminals when the door is opened for inspection or maintenance, achieving IP40 protection against solid objects greater than 1mm — significantly reducing the risk of accidental contact with energized parts compared to open-type distribution boards.

Spacious Internal Capacity

Generous internal dimensions and uncluttered layout provide ample wiring space for cable bending radius compliance, multiple circuit entries, and convenient tool access — reducing installation time and ensuring reliable, long-lasting electrical terminations even with larger cross-section cables.

Modular Component Assembly

The component mounting plate can be fully assembled with DIN-rail mounted devices (MCBs, RCCBs, RCBOs, contactors, and terminal blocks) outside the enclosure and then installed as a complete assembly — significantly reducing on-site wiring time and improving build quality by allowing controlled workshop assembly.

Multi-Level Disassembly

Both the door assembly and internal component mounting plate can be easily removed for convenient access during installation and major maintenance — the door can also be reversed for alternate hinge-side opening to suit site layout requirements, providing maximum flexibility for electricians working in confined spaces.

Durable Surface Protection

Electrostatic spray-powder coating with minimum 60μm thickness provides excellent adhesion, uniform coverage, and long-lasting corrosion protection — resistant to scratching, chipping, and fading in normal indoor service conditions, maintaining a professional appearance over many years of service.

Reversible Door Hinge

The hinged steel door can be reversed to open from either the left or right side, allowing the installer to choose the hinge direction that best suits the site layout, clearance requirements, and operator access — eliminating the need to order a special left- or right-hand variant.

Wide Application Versatility

Suitable for lighting and power terminal distribution across a broad range of facility types — new residential buildings, industrial plants, commercial shopping centers, factory workshops, mining facilities, and office buildings — wherever a robust, cost-effective steel loop box with IP40 protection is required for indoor or sheltered LV cable distribution.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about ABX-T steel enclosure loop boxes

What is the difference between this steel ABX-T and the plastic ABX-T-2 version?

Both are ABX-T loop boxes but target different environments: (1) This steel ABX-T — cold-rolled steel enclosure with electrostatic powder coating, IP40 protection, designed for indoor or sheltered outdoor installation, supports surface or flush (recessed) mounting, and features a multi-layer protective shield that isolates the operator from live parts when the door is open. It is the cost-effective choice for building interiors. (2) The ABX-T-2 (plastic/stainless version) — PC/ABS alloy or stainless steel enclosure, IP54/IP65 protection, designed for underground pit or exposed ground-mounted outdoor installation, with a 180° upward-opening door and concealed vandal-resistant screws. It is built for harsh outdoor/underground environments. Choose the steel ABX-T for indoor building distribution where IP40 is sufficient and cost is a priority; choose the ABX-T-2 for outdoor or underground installations requiring higher weather protection. Both share the same electrical ratings (400V, up to 630A, 15kA/20kA).

Can the steel ABX-T be installed outdoors?

The steel ABX-T is rated IP40, which provides protection against solid objects greater than 1mm but does NOT provide protection against water ingress. It is designed for indoor installation or sheltered outdoor locations where it is not directly exposed to rain, water splash, or spray. Suitable sheltered outdoor locations include covered walkways, equipment shelters with roofs, and enclosed kiosks. It must NOT be installed in locations subject to direct rain, water jets, flooding, or high humidity where condensation may occur inside the enclosure. For outdoor installations exposed to the weather, the ABX-T-2 (IP54/IP65) or the JP series outdoor distribution box should be used instead. When installing the steel ABX-T in a sheltered outdoor location, ensure the area is well-ventilated to prevent condensation and that the enclosure is not exposed to direct sunlight, which could cause overheating.

How does the multi-layer protective shield improve safety?

The multi-layer protective shield is an internal physical barrier located between the operator side (where the door opens) and the live components (busbars and device terminals). Its purpose is to prevent accidental contact with energized parts when the door is opened for inspection or maintenance. Without this shield, opening the door of a live distribution box exposes the operator to busbars and terminals at mains potential, creating a significant electric shock hazard — especially in low-voltage distribution where voltages up to 400V can be fatal. The shield allows the operator to view indicator lights and device status through gaps or transparent sections while keeping fingers and tools away from live parts. For maintenance work on the actual devices, the shield can be removed after the upstream supply has been isolated and locked out (LOTO procedure). This design achieves IP40 protection against solid objects greater than 1mm, meaning even a finger cannot reach live parts through the shield.

What does flush-mounted vs surface-mounted mean for this box?

The steel ABX-T supports two installation methods: (1) Flush-mounted (concealed) — the steel enclosure body is recessed into a wall cavity or chase, with only the door and front frame sitting flush with the wall surface. This gives a clean, unobtrusive finish and is the preferred method for new-build residential and commercial installations where wall cavities are accessible during construction. The wall opening must be sized to match the enclosure dimensions. (2) Surface-mounted (exposed) — the entire enclosure is mounted on the surface of the wall, with cables routed to it via surface conduit or trunking. Surface mounting is used in retrofit projects, concrete or solid-wall buildings, and industrial premises where wall chasing is impractical or where the box must remain fully accessible for maintenance. Both methods provide identical electrical performance and IP40 protection; the choice depends on the building construction and aesthetic requirements. When ordering, specify the installation method so the correct mounting brackets and cable knockouts are provided.

Can the component mounting plate be pre-assembled before installation?

Yes — one of the key design features of the steel ABX-T is the removable component mounting plate. The entire DIN-rail assembly, including all MCBs, RCCBs, RCBOs, contactors, terminal blocks, and busbars, can be pre-assembled in a workshop environment on the bench, then installed into the enclosure as a single complete unit. This modular approach offers several advantages: (1) Improved build quality — workshop assembly under controlled conditions allows better wire routing, labeling, and quality inspection. (2) Reduced on-site time — the electrician only needs to mount the enclosure, install the pre-assembled plate, and connect the incoming and outgoing cables. (3) Easier maintenance — if a major component fails or the configuration needs to change, the entire plate can be removed and replaced, minimizing downtime. (4) Safer wiring — bench assembly reduces the risk of working in awkward positions inside a wall-mounted enclosure. GOHO can supply the loop box either empty (for on-site assembly) or fully pre-wired to your single-line diagram.

How is the steel loop box grounded, and is it required?

The steel ABX-T loop box is grounded through the protective earth (PE) conductor of the incoming cable, which is connected to a grounding terminal inside the enclosure. Since the enclosure is made of steel (a conductive material), proper grounding is MANDATORY and a legal safety requirement. The grounding serves to: (1) Protect personnel — if a live conductor faults to the steel enclosure, the fault current flows through the PE conductor to earth, causing the upstream protective device (MCB/MCCB/RCCB) to trip and de-energize the enclosure. Without grounding, the enclosure would become energized at mains voltage, creating a lethal touch hazard. (2) Bond cable armor — for armored cables, the steel armor must be bonded to the PE terminal to provide a fault return path and to manage induced voltages. (3) Provide equipotential bonding — the enclosure, door, DIN rail, and all metallic parts must be bonded together and to earth to prevent dangerous voltage differences between accessible metal parts. Always verify grounding continuity during commissioning and include the loop box in the periodic inspection and test schedule.
