European vs American Type Prefabricated Substation: What is the Difference?

Ask a supplier to quote a prefabricated substation and the first question you will likely hear is “European or American type?” It sounds like a regional preference, but it is really a question about your distribution network — specifically whether your power comes in overhead or underground. Getting that match wrong causes cable termination problems on site that are expensive to fix.

Here is how we explain the difference to clients, after supplying both types across Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia.

It comes down to overhead versus underground

Both types are factory-assembled units — HV switchgear, a transformer, and LV distribution in one weatherproof box. The difference is the network they plug into.

European type — the YBM series — is built for overhead line distribution or cable entry from below. It is a compact kiosk-style enclosure with visible switchgear compartments, equally at home in rural and urban networks.

American type — the ZBW series — is a pad-mounted unit for underground cable distribution. It is fully enclosed, no live parts exposed, and designed to sit quietly in a residential street or public space without alarming anyone.

That one architectural choice — visible compartments versus fully sealed — drives everything else.

If you need more than 1600kVA, or a voltage above 12kV, the European type is effectively your only option in this family — the American pad-mounted design tops out lower.

When European type makes sense

  • Your network runs on overhead lines.
  • You need voltage flexibility — 12kV, 24kV, or higher.
  • Capacity is above 1600kVA.
  • The site is industrial or rural, where full enclosure is not critical.
  • You want easy front access for routine maintenance.

When American type makes sense

  • Your network uses underground cables.
  • The unit sits in a residential neighborhood, public street, or plaza.
  • Safety and appearance demand a fully sealed, pad-mounted design.
  • You want tamper resistance and fault protection as priorities.

There is a reason American type is the default in US residential subdivisions: a fully enclosed pad-mounted box can sit on a sidewalk corner with zero risk to passersby and zero maintenance drama. The same logic applies anywhere the substation shares space with people.

The specialized relatives

Two other configurations come up often enough to mention:

  • Container-type photovoltaic substations — the YBW series — are built for solar farms, stepping inverter output up for grid connection, typically 40.5kV/0.315-0.69kV.
  • Wind power substations — the ZFS series — bundle monitoring, protection, and fiber-optic communication for renewable projects.

These are not competing with the European/American choice; they are answers to a different question entirely — how to connect generation to the grid.

The mistake we keep seeing

The recurring error is picking a type for price or availability instead of matching it to the network. We have watched an American-type unit get installed on a network that actually ran overhead lines — and the cable termination problem surfaced immediately, followed by a costly rework.

Before you order, answer four things:

  • Is the network overhead or underground?
  • What voltage does the utility actually use?
  • What capacity do you need — and will you need more?
  • Does the site sit in a public area that demands full enclosure?
